Position Summary
Develop, teach, and assess fiber optics courses for a certificate program, contribute to department work, engage in professional development and contribute to shared governance obligations including accreditation. May be assigned to teach online, hybrid, live virtual, or traditional day or evening classes. 

Key Performance Indicators
  1. Number of students successfully completing fiber optic technology programs, and earning industry recognized credential. 2. Employer partnerships/job placement of program completers
  2. Retention of students in programs
  3. Submission of grades timely
  4. Maintain and seek to improve fiber optic technology program equipment
  5. Safety of programs 
Essential Functions
  1. Design courses to develop fundamental skills required to serve as an entry-level fiber optic cable installer or technician.
  2. Develop and follow an appropriate course syllabus for each course taught
  3. Develop content-related and appropriate instruction based on national, state and local curriculum through a combination of classroom and laboratory experiences (this include work-site locations) working in cooperation with the Business, Math, Technology, and Industry department.
  4. Teach fundamental principles of fiber optic technology, including installation, cable termination, fusion splicing, and using fiber optic testing equipment to troubl3shoot transmission lines.
  5. Develop and execute lesson plans leading toward student achievement of competencies in the area of instruction.
  6. Develop and update program curriculum.
  7. Experience with online learning management systems or alternative instructional delivery systems
  8. Present subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques, such as lectures, discussions or demonstrations; ensures use of classroom time is organized and that instruction and clean-up (if applicable) can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  9. Assist students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts; responds to basic student questions; may initiate study groups in preparations for examinations.
  10. Administer subject specific assessments to determine student levels of competence.
  11. Develop and enforce classroom protocols, rules and regulations; maintain classroom discipline; utilize effective classroom management techniques.
  12. Provide a classroom environment promoting active learning in the subject area.
  13. Communicate responsibly with students, colleagues, and community members.
  14. Manage and maintain program facilities and equipment.
Education
High School Diploma, Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician
 
Work Experience
At least three years of fiber optics/cabling experience required
Teaching/training experience preferred
 
Industry Knowledge:
Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or Fiber Optics Installer (FOIC)
Communication systems – copper, fiber and wireless fiber optic systems, network cabling, design, termination, splicing, testing, fiber optic installation
 
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Physical ability to provide instruction in fiber optics, and cabling.  Ability to safely operate equipment and monitor student safety which involves reaching in any direction, performing repetitive motions and performing two-handed activities.
This position requires sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting up to fifty pounds, grasping, talking, seeing, hearing and repetitive motion.
Ability to work some evenings and weekends based on student needs. Some travel may be required.
