Dean of Students

Summary:  
The Dean of Students is a key member of the school's leadership team, responsible for supporting the Principal(s) in maintaining a positive school environment conducive to learning. This individual will primarily focus on implementing the Student Code of Conduct, providing social behavioral, and attendance support to students, and collaborating with staff, parents/guardians, and the community to promote student success.
 
Reports To: Building Principal
 
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Assist building administration in implementing the Student Code of Conduct and attendance policies, ensuring consistency and fairness in disciplinary procedures.
  • Provide students with social and behavioral support, promptly addressing behavior concerns and discipline referrals and following due process protocols.
  • Supervise student activities throughout the school day and maintain open communication with building administration, parents/guardians, and stakeholders regarding disciplinary actions.
  • Collaborate with building administration to promote a safe and inclusive school environment conducive to learning; aligning behavior and discipline approaches with instructional strategies and district goals.
  • Monitor student behavior, and attendance, providing feedback to teachers, students, and parents/guardians as needed.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping of behavioral data and provide necessary information to support appropriate decision-making.
  • Make decisions with student interests in mind, prioritizing academic success and maintaining fair disciplinary policies.
  • Support the implementation of board policies and the school's strategic plan, working with stakeholders to achieve school-wide goals.
  • Participate in professional development activities related to social and behavioral support, cultural proficiency, and diversity awareness.
  • Serve as a behavior and discipline interventionist, facilitating restorative practices to support the school's culture and community.
  • Create and promote programs that facilitate positive school culture and interaction with the community.
  • Attend and supervise school events including but not limited to: celebrations of student achievement, school-sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events.
  • Foster positive relationships with the community, students, and parents/guardians through active engagement and proactive communication.
  • Serve as the administrative designee during principal absences.
  • Support the IEP process to ensure that each student receives the necessary academic and behavioral support for success.

  • Strong understanding of educational policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of restorative practices and evidence-based behavioral interventions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency in using educational technology and office equipment.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work independently.
  • Consistent and regular attendance:  an essential function of this position.
  • A commitment to the belief that all students can learn and succeed.
 
Education and Experience:
  • Minimum: Master's Degree in school administration, education, or relevant degree;
  • Evidence of successful experience as a classroom teacher; 4 years minimum of classroom teaching experience.
  • Bilingual ability; English required and Spanish desired.
 
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time. 
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
