Whitfield School, an innovative educational institution for students in grades 6-12, announces an opening for a Director of Finance and Operations.

Whitfield School is seeking an energetic and entrepreneurial individual to lead and oversee the School’s finances and operations. At the broadest level, the director of finance and operations (DFO) directs all financial activities of the School, including facilities and operations. This person is responsible for the planning, control, account and reporting of income, expenses, and contributed and invested funds of the School. In addition, the DFO manages all activities designated as Business Office responsibilities, including physical plant and grounds; risk management and insurance; transportation; compensation and benefits budgets; food service; human resources; facilities leasing; and city, state, and federal government compliance. 

The DFO reports to the head of school; serves on the administrative leadership team; supervises the director of security, the director of maintenance, and all Business Office personnel; attends board meetings; and serves as the primary administrative liaison to the board’s Finance and Investment Committee and Building and Grounds Committee.

Qualifications and experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree required, M.B.A., and/or a master’s degree in a related field a plus;
  • Eight to ten years of financial and business leadership in a non-profit or for-profit organization;
  • CPA professional accreditation is a plus but is not required;
  • Experience in human resource management, employee benefits, and payroll procedures;
  • Knowledge of business and not-for-profit accounting policies, procedures, best practices, and software programs;
  • Knowledge and experience in setting up effective financial controls and proven financial modeling and forecasting skills;
  • Experience in an independent secondary school, college, or university setting is preferred, but not required;
  • Experience working on a senior leadership team and with boards.
