The Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools serves 1600 students from PreK-12 and is a free, open-enrollment public charter school. Over 92% of our students are Latinx. Our school system consists of Guadalupe Centers High School, Guadalupe Centers Middle School, and Guadalupe Centers Elementary School. Our system grew out of Guadalupe Centers’ educational programming. Guadalupe Centers is the longest continuously operating agency serving the Latinx community in the US since 1919. Our roots in our community run deep.

Summary: The English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher works to deepen students’ understanding of the English language through reading, writing, and speaking. 
 
Reports To: Building Principal
Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Maintains discipline in the classroom.
  • Takes responsibility for student achievement. 
  • Evaluates, records, and reports student progress.
  • Assigns lessons and corrects homework.
  • Keeps attendance records.
  • Confers with students, parents, and school counselors to resolve behavioral and academic problems.
  • Uses audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
  • Prepares course outlines and objectives according to curriculum guidelines or state and local requirements. Develop lesson plans.
  • Develops and administers assessments.
  • Performs advisory duties, such as sponsoring student organizations or clubs, helping students select courses, and counseling students with problems.
  • Instruct students, using various teaching methods, such as lectures and demonstrations.
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • Selects, stores, orders, issues, and inventories classroom equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Attend all meetings with parents and give input concerning the creation of an Individual Education Plan or a 504 Plan
  • Ensure implementation of all modifications and accommodations for students with Special Needs (IEP/504)
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement of professional practice, cultural competence, and ability to meet the specific instructional needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of the area of teaching and ability to communicate that knowledge.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; different learning styles.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education.
  • Missouri State Certification in Secondary Education. 
  • Two to four years of experience working in a classroom setting.
  • Experience in an urban school setting is preferred.
  • Bilingual ability, English required and Spanish preferred.
  • Highly Qualified Status: this status requires the following… 
    • Bachelor’s Degree.
    • Appropriate certification for the course/grade level being taught. 
    • Documentation of content expertise in the area being taught.  
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer or standing to teach.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
