JOB TITLEBilingual School Counselor (Supporting Newcomer English Learners and Families)
 
REPORTS TO:  Assistant Superintendent for Data, Intervention, and Student Support                          
 
EXAMPLE (S) of WORK PERFORMED:
  • Assist in creation of EL ILP plans for students.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of effective mentoring and counseling supports for ELs.
  • Help immigrants and other EL students adjust and acclimate to school.
  • Engage in and facilitate professional development.
  • Assist parents of English learners with school involvement opportunities.
  • Guides individuals and groups of students through the development of educational and career plans.
  • Counsels small groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans and by providing and participating in orientations programs for students and parents.
  • Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students by conducting faculty in-service programs and parent education programs.
  • Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  • Refers students and families to appropriate school and community resources such as school and/or community-based psychologists, school nurses, and administrators for educational and career assistance.
  • Participates in, coordinates, and/or conducts activities which contribute to an effective school environment such as interpreting test results, and being a student advocate.
  • Pursues professional growth through postgraduate education, attendance at local and state staff development programs and participation in professional organizations.
  • Maintains and updates student records, and when appropriate, reviews with parents and teachers, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Conducts parent learning sessions for newcomer families
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
