Essential Functions
- Safety Management: Approves and monitors safety procedures (e.g., bus stops, routing, scheduling) to ensure safe student transportation.
- Program Management: Oversees departmental activities like bus driver licensing, background checks, physicals, drug testing, and pre/post vehicle inspections.
- Collaboration: Works with district administrators to develop standards for bus purchases, preferred suppliers, and other transportation-related decisions.
- Training Development: Designs and implements an in-service training program for all transportation staff to meet state requirements and improve safety awareness.
- Routing & Scheduling: Utilizes transportation routing software to forecast and assign transportation services to students.
- Communication: Interprets and communicates transportation procedures to internal and external stakeholders.
- Record Keeping: Maintains accurate records on transportation-related data, including student eligibility, route mileage, traffic accidents, and special trip reports.
- Budget Management: Oversees a $9 million transportation budget, ensuring effective resource allocation.
- Personnel Management: Conducts hiring, evaluations, and other administrative functions to ensure adequate staffing and maintain workforce efficiency.
- Supervision: Directly supervises multiple line managers and over 200 employees, ensuring performance and compliance with regulations.
- Safety & Incident Management: Investigates safety issues and traffic accidents, taking action to ensure a safe environment for both students and staff.
- District Leadership: Participates in district leadership meetings and makes recommendations to achieve district goals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient departmental operations.
Skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and teams effectively.
- Proficient with standard office equipment and software applications.
- Proficient with transportation technology including routing and GPS tools.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Thorough understanding of pertinent laws, codes, policies, and regulations related to student transportation.
- Knowledge of transportation program planning, budgeting, and safety standards.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and stakeholders.
- Job-related experience within a transportation leadership role is required. Five (5) years experience in transportation supervision preferred.
- Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Valid driver’s license and CDL
