POSITION SUMMARY: As a member of the Guidance Department staff at the elementary level, a counselor is to provide a comprehensive guidance program for students as appropriate to their grade level. The counselor provides activities to meet the needs of the students, consults with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students and provides support to other educational programs.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

1. Deliver classroom guidance lessons on life skills, social-emotional health, career exploration
2. Hold a Master’s Degree in Counseling and counselor certification through state of Missouri
3. Co-facilitate the 504 / Child Find process to determine what students may be eligible for 504 services
4. Case Manager for all building 504 plans
5. Facilitate 504 meetings on an annual basis
6. Track student attendance data and intervene when necessary
7. Work with other district personnel such as social workers, 504 admin, homeless liaison, and school nurse to know resources available to families (clothing, food, transportation, etc.).
8. Attend district and county counselor meetings
9. Attend required trainings and professional development activities (504, MAP testing, risk assessments, etc.)
10. Mediating student conflict and bullying
11. Serve as a resource and support for teachers and parents
12. Advocate for students during Child Services interviews conducted at school
13. Understand the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program and how each component is vital to be effective.
14. Serve on district level Crisis Team
15. Reporting of child neglect and abuse to Child Services
16. Serve on/ coordinate Student Success Team meetings/ RTI including collecting and analyzing data and collaborating with staff and parents
17. Sit in as LEA on IEP meetings as needed
18. Offer individual counseling to students as needed, coordinate referrals as needed
19. Facilitate small group counseling sessions (grief, divorce, emotional control, etc.)
20. Collaborate with external agencies and liaison counselors
21. Advocate for students
22. Test coordinators for the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP)
23. Conduct At-Risk Screenings and Assessments (students stating intent to self-harm)
24. Conduct Kindergarten screenings
25. Work closely with building administrators to ensure social emotional needs of staff and students are met
26. Perform other duties as assigned

8. Possess the ability to coach others by accurately assessing strengths and needs of students, providing feedback, and encouraging reflective questioning.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 

1. Missouri Counselor K-8 Certification through DESE

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, and utilize manual dexterity.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception.
