ST. JAMES R-I SCHOOL DISTRICT
CERTIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION
Title: Elementary Counselor 

Qualifications: 
  1. Valid Missouri certificate issued by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in K-8 Counseling  
  2. Master’s Degree in Education or Counseling 
  3. A minimum of two years teaching experience at elementary level  

Reports To: Elementary Principal 
Supervises: Counselors’ Secretary  
Job Goal: 
Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.
Performance Objectives: 
  1. Implement elementary school guidance curriculum and evaluate and revise such programs on an ongoing basis to include collaboration with teachers to present school counseling core curriculum lessons
  2. To assist in the transition and vertical integration into the middle school 
  3. Counsel students individually and in groups about education as well as personal and social issues
  4. Consult with teachers, parents, and students regarding the developmental needs of students and insure the appropriate placement in relation to those needs
  5. Aide in the development of a master schedule, as necessary 
  6. Assist with the Early Childhood Program and Kindergarten screening processes
  7. Assist with the PK-5 class list creation 
  8. Refer students to outside agencies, as necessary 
  9. Collaborate with administrative staff and be involved with appropriate individual and group testing in order to insure proper placement, planning, and assessment of school curricula 
  10. Help district administration identify and resolve student issues, needs and problems
  11. Advocate for students at individual education plan meetings, student study teams and school attendance review boards
  12. Analyze disaggregated data as requested by administration
  13. Comply with federal, state, local, and Board of Education policies and regulations
  14. Other professional duties as may be assigned by the Principal





TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment is on an annual basis.  The Building Principal makes employment recommendations in March of each year for the next fiscal year.  The final decision is made by the Board of Education.  Salary is based on the Certificated Salary Schedule adopted annually by the Board of Education.
EVALUATION
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of MSBA Board of Education Policy on Evaluation of Professional Staff (GCN)
