CERTIFIED POSITION - SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER  
  • Base Salary: Certified Teacher Schedule - $42,800 
  • Full benefits package

POSITION SUMMARY
To provide students with mild, moderate or intensive special needs instruction, guided practice, assessments, remediation and enrichment through a variety of learning opportunities and ensure a positive, successful educational experience for students.  Ensures that all special needs students acquire the grade level expectation skills set forth by Missouri Department of Education and Hillsboro R-3 curriculum.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Develops a program of study that meets the individual needs of students with a variety of disabilities.
  • Prepares course objectives and outlines for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of State and school in consultation with general education teachers.
  • Teaches socially acceptable behavior, employing behavior modification techniques such as positive reinforcement.
  • Provides instructional support in one-on-one or small group settings in the Special Education classroom and/or regular classroom.
  • Assigns lessons, corrects homework and provides students with positive feedback and constructive criticism on assignments.
  • Administers tests to evaluate student’s progress, record results and issues reports or conducts meetings to inform parents of progress.
  • Compiles, maintains and files all reports, records and other legally documentation for special education students.
  • Works with parents, staff, counselors and general education teachers to develop, implement and maintain Individual Education Programs (I.E.P’s) for each student that meets their individual needs, interests and abilities.
  • Establishes and enforces rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  • Employs special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition and memory.
  • Keeps attendance records.
  • Maintains discipline in the classroom.
  • Recognizes and refers students encountering medical, physical and/or psychological problems to District specialists as required.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships by actively communicating with the parents, involving them in their child’s education.
MARGINAL DUTIES
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, mentor programs and teacher training workshops.
  • Confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers and professionals to develop individual educational plans designed to promote students’ educational, physical and social development.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Performs related duties such as sponsoring one or more co-curricular activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study and counseling students in adjustment and academic problems.
  • Contributes to the decisions made by the District and building regarding budget, facilities, curriculum and personnel well-being.
  • Maintains a physically and aesthetically attractive classroom setting and exercises proper care of district equipment.
  • Performs additional tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides basic supervision of paraeducator(s) during daily activities.  
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related discipline from a four-year College or University
  • Missouri State Teaching Certificate – Special Education
 PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • The employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.  The employee is frequently required to talk, hear, stand, walk, feel, grasp, push, reach with hands/arms, stoop, kneel, crawl, perform repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement, and move up or down from/to sitting position. 
 MENTAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality; communicate clearly both orally and in writing
