Title: Teacher (Special Education)
Reports to: Building Principal/Assistant Superintendent
Classification: Certified
FLSA Status: Exempt
Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified Staff.
Terms of Employment and compensation: Contract length will be determined by the Lexington R-V Board of Education.  Salary will be determined in accordance with the current extra duty and/or teacher salary schedule adopted by the Board for the school year.  Benefits will be determined by the Board.
JOB SUMMARY:  The Special Education Teacher is to help students utilize their strengths to acquire skills that will make them successful in the school and post-school environment.  The Special Education Teacher must maintain compliance with local, state, and federal compliance issues.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Additional duties may be assigned.
  • Comply with all regulations as outlined in the district’s compliance plan for Special Education.
  • Be an active member to the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Provide strategies to regular classroom teachers.
  • Administer and analyze evaluation instruments for students.
  • Initiate and collect data for yearly re-evaluations.
  • Complete all necessary forms within timelines.
  • Write diagnostic summaries.
  • Contact parents/guardians for IEP meetings.
  • Coordinate and make recommendations for the development of the IEP and complete necessary forms.
  • Schedule students for special services.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers on a regular basis to provide appropriate services.
  • Maintain contact with parents/guardians concerning student progress.
  • Plan and develop instruction for special students that will promote mastery of goals and objectives.
  • Maintain awareness of new developments in special education and other related areas.
  • Maintain appropriate files on special students.
  • Document student progress.
  • Attend meetings called by the Building Principal, Director of Special Services, and other school administrators. 
  • Serve on committees as required.
  • Report to the Special Education Director and Principal concerning special education programs, student progress, conflicts, and parent/guardian concerns, etc.
  • Supervise and give assignments to paraprofessionals.
  • Comply with all building and school policies.

  • The Teacher shall have completed a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • The Teacher shall possess the necessary certification for the position as required by the Missouri State Board of Education, as well as meet any other requirement as may be deemed necessary by the Lexington R-V Board of Education.
  • The employee will complete a satisfactory criminal/abuse and neglect background check in accordance with state law and Board policy
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see, and use repetitive motions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as reading handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.  The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
