Job Description:
Whitfield School, an innovative independent day school for students in grades 6-12, announces an opening for a Controller.

The Controller is an integral part of the Business Office and is responsible for all accounting activities, including management of the general ledger accounting system, ensuring accounts are maintained in accordance with GAAP, proper internal controls are in place, a timely month-end close, and all appropriate general ledger accounts are properly reconciled. The strongest candidates will have experience with non-profit accounting, general ledgers, and financial statement audits. The Controller will also collaborate with a variety of internal stakeholders, including executive-level staff and other department directors on budgets and financial reporting. The role reports to the Director of Finance & Operations (DFO) and supervises one Business Office Associate.

Specific Responsibilities: 
  • Provide day-to-day management of all accounting functions, ensuring accurate and timely data entries to the accounting system and coherent financial reporting 
  • Execute the monthly closing process and timely and accurate preparation of internal financial statements
  • Prepare account reconciliations on a monthly basis for cash, investments, and contributions
  • Assist the DFO in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budgets and forecasts, working with other administrators and department heads concerning budget performance 
  • Manage the school’s annual audit, including preparation of schedules and any necessary tax filings, including Form 990, 5500, etc.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate procedures and controls for all financial systems in accordance with AICPA and FASB standards, and oversee all accounting functions
  • Work with the DFO to implement process improvements in the areas of financial reporting, payroll processing, student billing, internal accounting controls, and budgeting
  • Supervise and support one Business Office Associate 
  • Oversee student billing and all family communications related to financial obligations and collection efforts 
  • Oversee daily cash management
  • Coordinate and execute the monthly payroll process with a third-party vendor
  • Assist the DFO with review of benefits packages and execute the annual open enrollment for all benefit plans
  • Communicate human resources, payroll, and accounting policies and procedures to employees as needed, and ensure compliance with policies 
  • Serve as an administrative liaison for the Parents’ Council and attend monthly Executive Committee meetings
  • Oversee the daily operation of the Campus Store, Café, and Concession Stand
  • Coordinate and supervise the operation of school transportation services, including the operation of a daily shuttle
  • Work with academic department heads to execute the virtual online bookstore
  • Oversee business and operations records retention 
  • Participate in external surveys and reports as requested by the DFO 
  • Participate in professional development to ensure understanding of current GAAP and accounting regulations
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required; MBA or CPA preferred
  • Minimum of five years of professional accounting experience. Experience working in non-profit accounting and/or public accounting strongly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate effective, professional relationships with students and families, faculty and staff 
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills  
  • The ability to manage time efficiently and effectively prioritize responsibilities
  • Professional presentation and excellent written communication skills 
  • A high degree of cultural competency with demonstrated success working with individuals from diverse backgrounds 
  • High ethical standards and strong professional boundaries 
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and Blackbaud Financial Edge and/or like systems
