Job Description:
The Manager of MakerSpace leads the Science Center’s tinkering activities, primarily in the MakerSpace gallery, and is the champion for SLSC’s tinkering philosophy. A tinkerer is one who experiments with materials and ideas to fully understand their capacities, and who further iterates on their learning to find better solutions to current problems. This individual will support their colleagues and engage guests through challenging exhibits, hands-on experiences, and workshops that highlight the “maker mindset.” This position will serve as an advocate to middle childhood, primarily 8–12-year-olds, and will develop and nurture experiences with a particular focus on this age range, while ensuring engaging experiences for all ages. They will also work to support the Science Center’s current MakerSpace and GameXPloration galleries. Engage guests in understanding that through the processes of exploration and invention lies the potential for innovation.

  • Manage the operations of the MakerSpace and GameXPloration galleries and their educational programming.
  • Including daily operations, supervision of team members, budgets, and opening and closing of galleries. 
  • Manage the design of new programs that advance the Science Center’s mission.  
  • Manage and support the development of curriculum that meets Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in support of serving our school community. 
  • Implement projects and lessons plans based on this curriculum for workshops and school field trip experiences.
  • Support the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that utilize best practices in organizational and project management. 
  • Participate in the hiring process for new, high-performing, motivated team members. 
  • Evaluate team performance and review resources to ensure learning and developmental goals of team members are met. 
  • Work cross departmentally to ensure program and project success. 
  • Support Science Center’s marketing team with social media presence in the galleries.
  • Network and engage with the national and regional STEAM education community to cultivate key partnerships and new programming ideas.
  • Represent the Science Center at local, regional, national and international conferences, and participate in professional development opportunities for continual self-improvement.
  • Flexible Schedule and the ability to work weekends and holidays is required to accommodate the needs of our guests.
  • The primary working hours of this job mirror the opening days of the Saint Louis Science Center. 9:00-4:30 Thursday- Monday.
  • Physical Demands: Must be able to actively engage guests during your shift. 
  • Be able to withstand large crowds and loud noises.
  • Act as a member of the gallery leadership team. Attend regular meetings and support the Associate Director of Gallery Programs in strategic planning efforts for new initiatives and projects.
  • Other duties as assigned 
  • BS or BA in a relevant Science, Education, or Museum field required.
  • 3-5 years supervisory experience required. 
  • 3-5 years of cultural institution experience and/or people facing work highly desirable. 
  • Interpretive training through the National Association of Interpretation highly desirable.
