Communications & Marketing Specialist

Reports to: District Superintendent
General Summary: Promote positive public relations/communications between the Sikeston R-6 School District and the community.  Prepare and provide information to the public/parents/R-6 staff about activities, goals, achievements, strategic changes/updates and crisis communications.  Serves as a communications leader for the district to maintain active and effective messaging & development. Executes the district’s philosophy, mission and vision.
Essential Functions:
  • Direct and manage the district’s public information activities.
  • Serve as the information liaison between the district and community.
  • Serves as district spoke person and coordinate media coverage.
  • Lead in the coordination of all social media on behalf of the district.
  • Collaborate with Administrative Team to maintain a positive public image.
  • Ensure information is disseminated and contributes to attaining the districts goals and objectives.
  • Communicate alerts to stakeholders (Administration, Board members, SRO) on school safety issues and how to communicate effectively. 
  • Maintain the district’s website ensuring accuracy, currency, attractiveness and ease of access.
  • Provides Marketing expertise and guidance for various advertising, promotional and educational efforts throughout the district.
  • Perform other duties on behalf of the superintendent for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.  
  • Bachelor’s Degree is required – Preferred in Communications, Mass Media, Public Relations or appropriate related field
  • Experience in Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field is preferred
  • Experience in a school setting or knowledge of school practices is preferred
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, accurately, and grammatically correct, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with staff, media and the community
  • Strong demonstration of creativity
  • Expertise in technology with regard to word processing, production of newsletters, brochures, advertising, video and photographic products
  • Knowledgeable of website practices
  • Experience in all forms of social media
  • Strong marketing knowledge and experience in advertising and media relations
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and planning skills; including the ability to prioritize
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to work independently on multiple assigned tasks/projects and complete assignments with specified deadlines
  • Other requirements – Must successfully pass a background check that is satisfactory to the Board of Education. Excellent organizational skills, oral and written skills, time management, and telephone skills. Computer knowledge and assistive technology.
