 ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):
  • Organizes and maintains a College Advisement Center; obtains, organizes and displays current college catalogs, bulletin boards with college information, brochures, handbooks and other appropriate resource materials. (not applicable for MS)
  • Assists the principal as the principal deems appropriate with creating schedules for students, maintaining and printing transcripts and school grade cards.
  • Plans and Maintains an Effective Comprehensive Counseling Program
  • Ensures students schedules are completed in a balanced and effective manner and distributed to students prior to schools beginning. Addresses schedule changes and registration effectives.   ensures students have a balanced schedule.
  • Provides Individual Student Planning
  • Discusses the comprehensive counseling program with the administrators and implements character and career education within the classroom.  Elementary provides classes in character education as needed and visits each class at the start of the year.  The MS counselor visits every classroom at the start of the year, provides character education and college planning classes throughout the year. The upper counselor teaches junior and senior seminar weekly. 
  • Communicates the goals of the comprehensive counseling program to education stakeholders by attending parent functions and by distributing a counseling brochure to families.
  • Completes home visits as needed with other support services, provides schools tours and implements a student welcome/buddy program as needed for new families
  • Acts as 504 coordinator for the school and carries out all associated 504 duties, ensures students receive services and reporting needs
  • Coordinates delivery of services for homebound and alternative placements
  • Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in the integration of the State Guidance Curriculum Standard Course of Study.
  • Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and goals and assists others with groups.
  • Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plans.
  • Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data and assists the assistant principal with attendance data who is the designated test coordinator for the school.
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Implements an effective referral and follow-up process and counselors students assigned to the recovery room.
  • Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the counseling profession.
  • Monitors student academic performance, behavior and attendance and assists with appropriate interventions.
  • Uses the majority of time providing direct services, Individual Student Planning and Preventive and Responsive Services and most remaining time in program management, system support and accountability.  (National standards recommend 80% of time in Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student Planning and Preventive and Responsive Services and 20% of time in program management, system support and accountability. {American School Counselor Association (2003).  The ASCA National Model:  A Framework for School Counseling Programs.  Alexandria, VA})
  • Provides applicable materials and resources to teachers for doing guidance activities in their classrooms.
  • Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and goals.
  • Apprises teachers of adaptive materials and services that exist and are available to students.
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Meets with team teachers regarding student concerns including behaviors, academics, and attendance.
  • Coordinates with the elementary counselors for 5th grade transition and the Upper School Counselor for 9th grade transition.
  • Promotion of summer camps in conjunction with Friends of UA.

Desirable Experience: 
  • Successful full time experience as a teacher or counselor
