Job Description:
Summary: The External Communications Coordinator is responsible for assisting with delivering external communications programs which deliver timely, targeted, creative, engaging, and cost-effective external communications.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Develops and maintains aspects of the district and school websites for the purpose of providing accurate and up-to-date information for the community and resources for the staff. 
  • Solicits news and information in order to generate newsworthy stories and then writes online copy for media releases, talking points, articles, and websites, or social media content. 
  • Identifies creative and strategic opportunities for increased positive media coverage for SSD. 
  • Monitors, analyzes, and communicates the frequency and nature of media coverage regarding people, events, and issues in the district. 
  • Assists with maintaining the District’s brand identity and vision in all messaging. 
  • Prepares e-newsletters and collateral materials for distribution both within and outside the District. 
  • Oversees collaboration with translators to ensure key messages are translated into other languages for electronic and print publications. 
  • Acts as a liaison to business officials, community partners, Realtors, faith leaders, the media, and other community contacts. 
  • Assists with public relations efforts for ballot initiatives; prepares work plans and strategies for information dissemination. 
  • Supports graphic design, photography, video development, and other multimedia needs. 
  • Collaborates with members of the Communications Department on associated projects. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis on communications, public relations, journalism, or related field.
  • Prior experience (2-3 years) in a setting with duties to have included Communications planning, content development, and social media management.
  • Knowledge of best practices, current strategies, and techniques in communications, public information, video production, and social media.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in planning, composing, and editing electronic media and social media.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including editing, and proofreading (using AP style) with the ability to communicate respectfully, clearly, and concisely.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Acrobat) preferred.
  • Experience utilizing website content management and email marketing systems.
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently, exercise independent judgment, set priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
