Job Purpose

The Reading Specialist will support school-wide efforts to ensure every child has the support needed to become a strong reader capable of going to and through college. The school-based Reading Specialist will work to accelerate student reading achievement by implementing network-wide reading initiatives, professional development, and programming as well as support teachers to develop high-quality small group reading instruction and interventions. The Reading Specialist will provide interventions to scholars to reach school-wide reading goals. The Reading Specialist is charged with creating a culture of reading that ensures strong reading instruction, excitement about books, and a genuine, institutional love for reading.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and facilitate the school’s literacy intervention program
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to identify the literacy needs of students, set learning goals and targets, and problem solve with teachers to develop best practices for continuous academic growth of students in literacy
  •  Assist teachers with the collection of data, analysis of data results and supports the sharing of findings with all staff
  • Review student achievement and assist with placing students in appropriate reading and writing intervention and support services
  •  Teach targeted literacy intervention to small groups of students daily using research-based strategies and resources
  • Meet regularly with the classroom teachers to plan literacy instruction that correlates with the individual student’s needs or as requested by the classroom teacher
  • Attend professional development to enhance knowledge of pedagogy and content, especially literacy
  • Maintain and submit accurate and up-to-date management records of all students’ progress
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal

  • Recognize, celebrate and reward scholar achievement and character development

  • Establish a positive, achievement-oriented and structured learning environment where all scholars are invested in their academic excellence and character growth and can fulfill their potential
  • Set measurable, ambitious, and attainable goals for the year and each interim assessment cycle
  • Evaluate individual scholar academic progress through regular and varied assessments

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or similar field required
  • Master’s Degree in Education strongly preferred
  • Certification in Special Reading K-12 by the Missouri Department of Education required
  • Understanding of STEP, Fountas & Pinnell, or Developmental Reading Assessment preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years or more of teaching experience
  • A demonstrated passion for and commitment to the mission of EAGLE
  • Demonstrated success working with elementary students preferred
  • Demonstrated success working in a high-performing, urban school setting is a plus
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Proven track record of student achievement result
