Job Description:
PURPOSE OF JOB: To promote, implement and uphold the professional standards of school nursing practice and follow state and local health practice statutes, district policies and administrative guidelines. The school nurse serves as a medical resource and health advocate for students and staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):
  • Conduct vision and hearing screenings (Mass screenings for grades K, 1, 3, 9, as well as individual screenings when needed).
  • Assist Healthy Kids health screenings and assessments for students in program.
  • Supervises prescribed medical treatments and medication administration according to School Board Policy.
  • Provides assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management and referral for appropriate medical care of students with acute/chronic health conditions in emergency situations.
  • Coordinates the provision of first aid supplies for First Responders and for school staff (e.g. disposable gloves, Band-Aids), orders/stocks medical supplies in the Health Room.
  • Provide medical and health services to students in the nurse’s office, other areas of the building (when needed) or on the school grounds (when needed).
  • Assist with the development or revision of policies, procedures and work standards for the school health program.
  • Monitors compliance with current state immunization and health assessment requirements.
  • Creates and maintains a current health record for each student enrolled in the school.
  • Collaborates with school support staff, as well as Children Mercy Hospital’s Wellness Clinic (Clinic) personnel, to meet health care needs of students and make referrals to the Clinic when appropriate.
  • Provides identification, assessment, care planning, referral and follow-up for students with acute/chronic health care needs and communicable diseases.
  • Serves on school committees, (ie. IEP and SST teams) upon request and as needed as a health care advisor and student advocate.
  • Provide nursing coverage in the upper or lower school nurse’s office (whichever is applicable) when the nurse is away from the building, in a classroom, or on other occasions as directed by the Director of Student Services.
  • Maintains orderly health room and enforces school discipline rules as outlined in Student Handbook.
  • Interprets student health care needs to families and school staff.
  • Educates families through written communication, verbal contacts and home visits when necessary to encourage follow-through of health care referrals.
  • Educates students, staff and parents/guardians regarding medical administration, medical procedures needed at school, acute/chronic illness management, prevention and control of communicable diseases, acute/chronic illness management, emergency care and other health related issues.
  • Provides assistance and counseling for students with psychological and medical concerns and/or physical limitations and assists in adaptation of any limitations and make referrals to school social worker when appropriate.
  • Serves as consultant and resource for health and wellness promotion, e.g., hygiene; nutrition; increasing physical activity; weight management; smoking – consequences/cessation, etc.
  • Serves as health-related resource for Healthe Kids and the Clinic.
  • Provides information regarding the availability of community resources and assistance to families in the utilization of health care and treatment services.
  • Provides instruction in Human Sexuality in conjunction with Upper School Health teachers and middle and lower school (grade 5 only) counselors using guidelines set out in Board Policy 6116.
  • Develops and conducts in-service training sessions for school staff on Bloodborne Pathogens, Diabetes Awareness, asthma, flu, wellness and other health related topics as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associates  in Nursing  
  • Current license to practice nursing in the state of Missouri.
  • Experience in Public Health Nursing is beneficial but not a requirement.
