Job Description
 
SUMMARY: Reports directly to the Superintendent. Experienced communicator who can create and implement programs that help the district establish effective relationships with key stakeholder groups, including parents, elected officials, community leaders, employees and the general public. Compelling writer and spokesperson who can communicate the schools' achievements, policies and challenges through a variety of channels, including the news media, printed materials, video, online communications and direct communications.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plans, develops, executes and evaluates effective internal and external public relations and other communication programs to support achievement of district goals and objectives.
  • Counsels Superintendent, Special Administrative Board, and administrative team in public relations and district management strategies.
  • Coordinates qualitative and quantitative research relating to demography, opinions of community and employees and other components associated with effective communication and satisfaction levels.
  • Coordinates all crisis communications for internal and external audiences.
  • Schedules and coordinates printing and publications.
  • Provides content and assists with creativity and management of the district's website.
  • Coordinates efforts with Director of Technology and other identified staff members.
  • Plans, coordinates and executes social media strategies to disseminate information to all stakeholders, as determined by public survey results.
  • Conducts effective media relations, which includes responsiveness by school officials and honest, open information to reporters.
  • Plans and coordinates special events, projects and activities.
  • Serves as public relations representative for the district and performs as liaison with community, media and other agencies.
  • Coordinates messages with key internal and external communicators, including key administrators, bargaining unit representatives, Parent Advisory Council members, PTO representatives, elected officials, clergy and other community leaders.
  • Facilitates ballot issue campaigns (i.e., tax rate increases, bond issues).Performs other duties as assigned.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, journalism or a related field is required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 7 -10 years of communications experience in business/industry or a school district is required. Previous experience working in a diverse public school district preferred.
  • Must be able to handle crisis communications effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Must have an understanding of effective public relations practices, including media relations.
  • Must be able to communicate with a wide range of community members, handle multiple tasks simultaneously and support district efforts to create a positive community presence.
  • Must be able to support schools in implementing effective communications with parents and community groups.
  • Must present proven track record in communications with creative and traditional strategies and approaches.
  • Must be familiar with various traditional and social media communications tools.
  • Serves as an integral part of the administrative leadership team.
  • Demonstrates organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of education environment.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Experience in handling media inquiries and crisis communications.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Demonstrated strong communications skills.
  • Successful completion of a background check by Human Resources. 
 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Year:    12 Month
Salary: $85,000/yr Max Administrator Range on the District Administrator Salary Schedule
