Job Description:
Shelterwood, a private Christian residential treatment center in Independence, MO, is looking for a ministry minded individual that can teach and understand how to work with kids while teaching science. This person should be a model of Christ to the residents that are going through therapy in the Shelterwood program too. 

Shelterwood is a Joint Commission-Accredited Cognia school-accredited Christian residential treatment center located on a beautiful secluded campus in Independence, MO. Shelterwood brings healing to teens and families through a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. We are hiring for a Performing Art Teacher with a heart for teens.
Duties include:
I.  Teaching Academic Courses
  • Prepare and plan lesson activities using a “brain-based” learning model
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure classroom environment
  • Responsible for managing classroom discipline
  • Responsible for reporting any student treatment issues to the student’s treatment team (Therapist, Residential Staff, and Principal or Dean of Student Services)
  • Implement modifications and accommodations in instruction to meet the individual needs of Shelterwood students
  • Ability to implement Trauma Informed Care (TBRI) techniques in engaging with students, and the ability to write and follow up on student assignments as necessary
  • Provide tutoring help as scheduled for students on academic restriction or those asking for assistance
  • Demonstrate required competencies
II.  Administration
  • Maintain a grade book and lesson plans that can be checked by supervisor at any time
  • Turn in grades in for grade checks in a timely manner
  • Responsible for attending weekly teacher’s meeting/trainings
  • Responsible for reporting daily behavior data
  • Responsible for timely submission of treatment plan reviews for assigned caseload of students
III. Skills Needed:
  • Proficiency in productivity applications.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage stress and interpersonal conflict
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to plan instruction and/or group activities to promote student growth in the performing arts
  • Ability to receive and act on constructive feedback
  • Ability to play piano, guitar, and/or sing (preferably a combination of the three) and offer instruction on these instruments
  • Basic proficiency in A/V equipment (including sound systems and projection)
Work Environment:
Office environment. Some exposure to noise and crisis situations. Some outdoor activities possibly during temperature or weather extremes may exist.

Physical Demands:
While performing this job, employee is required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Employee may need to pick up or move items over 50 pounds. Accommodations will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Requirements:

Monday-Friday 8:30 am to 4:30pm.  This is a year round position.
Education and Experience Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in science)
  • Experience teaching/leading youth
