The Ferguson Florissant School District is seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of a McKinney-Vento Social Worker for the remaining grant cycle of the 2019-2020 school year.  The Ferguson-Florissant School District has earned a national reputation as an innovative educational leader, and our staff works continually to provide the highest quality instructional program for our students.

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:   
Serve as an effective liaison for teachers, administrators, parents and students between school, home and community agencies for the purpose of improving the overall learning experience for children. Focus to be on assisting families/students who are displaced in order to ease the impact of homelessness in regards to student’s educational experiences at FFSD.  The worker for this position will primarily serve in an administrative capacity providing direct and indirect service to students and parents. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
  1. Assist the Homeless and Foster Care Liaison with implementing the McKinney-Vento Act under the ESSA Federal Guidelines.
  2. Assist with coordinating services to increase awareness of the McKinney-Vento Act within the FFSD and community.
  3. Participate in McKinney-Vento grant funded activities to increase higher education and job opportunities for students.
  4. Assist displaced students and families with immediate enrollment.
  5. Assess the needs and services of displaced students and families.
  6. Ability to visit all school locations as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities of displaced students/families.
  7. Physical stamina to handle challenging work schedules.
  8. Exercises sound judgment on sensitive issues in relationship to homelessness and in areas that impact student achievement.
  9. Ability to maintain effective and cooperative relationships with students, staff and families.
  10. Identify and remove barriers that impede stability of academic progress of McKinney-Vento students district-wide.
  11. Ability to organize, work with details and follow through.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Master’s in Social Work preferred, or other similar Master’s degree.
  2. Practicum experience or on-the-job experience in providing social services or counseling assistance.
  3. Demonstrate effective human relations skills and understanding of principles of youth development.
  4. Ability to interact effectively with students and parents in solving student problems, and in helping to resolve school/home related problems.
  5. Possess means of transportation.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES:
  1. Maintain close communication with the parent of students.
  2. Assist in the adjustment of all students and their parents to the new school environment in Ferguson-Florissant.
  3. Assist with the implementation and execution of evening outreach events to parents and students, college tours and other program opportunities for students in transition.
  4. Inform administrators and teachers of educational needs and problems of students.
  5. Work closely with the parent, student, principal, and teacher concerning the personal adjustment of the child and problem resolution.
  6. Work collaboratively with teachers, staff, principal and families to identify areas needing improvement/intervention.
  7. Work with schools to address discipline, bus and attendance issues.
  8. Make home visits as needed in fulfilling the responsibilities noted above.
  9. Support schools with cultural and diversity understanding of students.
  10. Assist schools in setting up special conferences with parents on an as needed basis.
  11. Support the school in committee work, activities and events.
  12. Assist the principal in checking truancy problems, recognizing signs of abuse/neglect, trauma and identifying issues related to poor academics and social behaviors of students.
  13. Maintain files on referrals and other notes summarizing problem situations.
  14. Provide crisis intervention which is geared primarily toward protecting the safety and emotional wellbeing of children.
  15. Implement the Migrant and Homeless policies of the District.  Serves as a District contact and resource for staff for implementation of the McKinney-Vento Act.
  16. Refer students and/or families requiring long-term intervention to outside resources such as social agencies, physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other professionals.
  17. Perform other duties and special job tasks as may be assigned by the Principal/Director of Student Services.
