Job Description:

Special Education/Educational Support Teacher - 2019
The Soulard School is seeking a part-time Special Education Teacher to join our co-teaching teams at our elementary location for the 2019-2020 school year.  This position will blend special education instruction within individualized education plans, and support for core instruction.
Major Responsibilities of Special Education Instruction:
  • Has knowledge and understanding of students’ rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
  • Supports the development and maintenance of individualized instruction within an individualized education plan (IEP)
  • Ensures accommodations for students with IEPs are implemented
  • Works effectively with classroom teachers to translate lesson plans into developmentally-appropriate learning experiences for students with IEPs
  • Evaluates students’ with IEPs academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  • Communicates and reports to the Director of Special Education in a timely, respectful manner.
Major Responsibilities of Core Classroom Support:
  • Has knowledge and understanding of instruction within a multi-tiered system of support 
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional material and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Identifies student needs and makes appropriate referrals, and develops strategies for instruction in a teamed approach.

  • Creates positive educational climate for students to learn in.
  • Utilizes curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.
  • Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with families, as well as strong communication between home and school.
  • Attends school events as specified in teacher contract.
  • Develops positive relationships with colleagues and peers.

Education and Experience 
  • A college degree in special education (required)
  • At least one year of teaching experience in an elementary setting (public or nonpublic). (preferred)
  • Missouri State teacher certification in special education (preferred)

Required Skills and Abilities
  • Warm and supportive attitude and disposition toward working with children and their families. 
  • Reliable attendance.
  • Willing to accept supervision in order to improve work performance.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  
  • Physically able to perform the job of a teacher of elementary-aged children. 

General Pay and Contract Provisions
•  10-15 hour work week
