Job title:  Dean of Instruction (DOI)
Reports to:  Head of School
Job purpose:
The Dean of Instruction provides leadership and management in instructional supervision, curriculum development, and the maintenance of academic systems.
Duties and responsibilities
Instructional Supervision
  • The DOI observes, coaches and mentors instructional staff (as assigned by the Head of School) to ensure that teaching is at all times intentional, engaging, and rigorous, and that teachers are creating a warm, structured, and responsive classroom culture
  • The DOI facilitates professional development experiences that enhance teachers’ understanding of Hawthorn’s Teaching Taxonomy.
  • The DOI provides onboarding to new teachers as it pertains to instructional planning, assessment, record keeping, and parent contact in support of academics.
Curriculum Development
  • The DOI leads content development in either English/Language Arts or Mathematics.
  • The DOI ensures that the content meets or exceeds the MO academic standards.
  • The DOI leads/co-leads faculty reviews of student work.
  • The DOI leads/co-leads faculty strategy sessions on student assessment data.
Maintenance of Academic Systems
  • The DOI will conduct weekly reviews of teacher gradebooks to insure compliance with Hawthorn’s minimum expectations for student productivity and teacher record keeping.
  • The DOI will maintain accurate record keeping for honors lists, academic privileges lists, and certify Valedictorians/Salutatorians for commencement.
Academic Support
  • The DOI will maintain ongoing contact with families of scholars who are not meeting academic expectations and are in danger of failing classes and/or being retained at grade level.
  • The DOI will serve as a member of the Hawthorn RTI team.
  • The DOI will collaborate with teachers to ensure that proper academic supports are in place for students who are struggling.
Student Supervision
  • The DOI will help provide supervision during the start of school, passing periods, student lunch, and after school.
  • The DOI will facilitate/co-facilitate at least one extra-curricular activity.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least five years of teaching as a secondary teacher.
  • A Master’s Degree
  • A demonstrated background in the development of rigorous academic content in a high poverty environment.
  • Experience in crafting academic interventions for struggling students.
  • Prior experience in meaningfully moving student performance on state assessments.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of a school administrator’s program.
  • A Ph.D in Curriculum and Instruction
  • Previous experience in a high performing/high poverty school setting.
  • Previous experience in an all-girls school.
Working conditions
The DOI position does require the lifting of up to 50 lbs.  The role does require meetings and phone calls beyond the school day.
Direct reports
The DOI will co-supervise teachers (as assigned by the Head of School).
Salary range
The Dean of Instruction shall earn a salary in a range from $50,000-$80,000.
