POSITION TITLE: Family and Community Engagement Manager

REPORTS TO: Principal

MAJOR POLICY RESPONSIBILITY:

The Family and Community Engagement Manager will primarily be responsible for conducting outreach throughout the urban core of Kansas City in an effort to recruit incoming students for the upcoming year. The Family and Community Engagement Manager will also provide support to students, families, and the school community in order to ensure access to the school and to increase opportunities for overall success, which includes student retention.

While, initially, the Family and Community Engagement Manager will work as the school’s lead enrollment and retention specialist, the Manager will also make recommendations after conducting a needs assessment to invest in additional programming and/or personnel. Most likely, the Manager’s initial years will be focused on ensuring that families gain access to the school, while later years may result in an increased focus on strategic partnerships to enhance student success and close the “opportunity gaps” frequently faced by students in underserved communities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (education, social work, youth development, or similar), Master’s preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a youth services, family support or K-12 educational setting; ideally at least one in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, proactive and resourceful in a complex and fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated success in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs. This includes successfully managing a budget and creating reports to leaders/funders.
  • Relationship management skills; experience creating collaboration among partner organizations.
  • Experience working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Creativity and team approach to responsibilities.
  • A demonstrated belief that all children can achieve at the highest levels.
  • A demonstrated passion for working and/or serving in underserved communities.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1.   Develop and drive the enrollment process:
  • Drive student enrollment.
  • Oversee administrative support for the enrollment process and student records keeping.
  • Make recommendations to the Principal regarding the enrollment process.
2.   Establish a family and community engagement strategy:
  • Establish credibility with the community and develop strong family relationships.
  • Develop appropriate channels of communication with families (ex. newsletters, website updates, etc.).
  • Help to ensure family attendance at critical events (ex. Parent-Teacher Conferences, PTA meetings, etc.)
  • Coordinate, train, and engage parent and community volunteers to ensure they are able to effectively support the school (ex. coordinating parent and community volunteers to support in classrooms, etc.).
3.   Conduct a needs assessment and implement additional programming and personnel needs:
  • Develop and conduct a needs assessment to identify additional supports needed for families in the community, especially as it relates to family access and student success at the school (ex. early learning supports, transportation needs, health and wellness programming, etc.).
  • Identify the appropriate programming and personnel requirements and develop an implementation plan and budget.
  • Present the plan to the school’s board of directors.
  • Collaborate with the principal and the school’s board to secure the appropriate funding, potentially including grant applications and management.
  • Report on progress to key stakeholders.
  • Over time, work with the principal and families to recruit new partners to continuously meet the changing needs of the students, families, and school community, particularly in ways that will reinforce the vision and mission of the holistic community revitalization effort surrounding the school. Provide leadership along with the student support team, which includes the School Nurse, Social Worker, Specialty Teachers, etc.
4.    Establish and cultivate strong external strategic partnerships:
  • Monitor staff needs to identify areas where strong external partnerships could support the team or other elements of the school.
  • Where appropriate, formalize strategic partnerships with an appropriate Memorandum of Understanding.
  • Coordinate out of school learning opportunities in partnership with teachers (ex. field trips, etc.).
