Job Description:
 Summary: The purpose of this position is to 1) determine students’ eligibility for special education services by assessing their cognitive ability, processing strengths and weaknesses, adaptive behavior, social/emotional/behavioral functioning and academic achievement, and 2) to assist in the development of a specific educational program for the student. 

Instruction and Learning – Student achievement/performance and staff growth 
  1. Participates as a team member in the multidisciplinary evaluation process.
  2. Prior to a referral for an SSD evaluation consults with school staff requiring academic/behavioral interventions and appropriateness of referral.
  3. Administers diagnostic tests and procedures to determine students’ cognitive ability, processing strengths and weaknesses, adaptive behavior development, academic achievement levels emotional/behavioral functioning.
  4. Schedules pre-evaluation, post-evaluation and re-evaluation conferences in collaboration with parents, school staff and SSD evaluation team.
  5. Attends pre-evaluation conferences with parents and school officials to obtain pertinent background information, review school concerns, explain parental rights and responsibilities and secure permission to evaluate.
  6. Review student files, referral packets and gathers pertinent data from physicians, mental health professionals and outside agencies.
  7. Attends diagnostic conferences and reports assessment results and recommendations to parents, students, teachers, counselors and other interested and/or entitled parties.
  8. Serve as chairperson at diagnostic conferences and is responsible for ensuring that diagnostic decisions are made in compliance with DESE criteria and best professional practice.
  9. Maintains case records by preparing, editing, and proofing the final assessment report in a timely manner.
  10. Attends local/regional/national conferences and workshops, in-service training, staff meetings and credit courses (when necessary) in order to keep abreast of new developments and maintain certification and/or licensure.
  11. Assists with interviewing of prospective educational examiners, in-service training of school personnel and orientation of new staff members.

  3. Transports tests kits between school locations (dexterity)
  4. Administers tests and diagnostic procedures (dexterity)
  5. Prepares and maintains written reports (writing requirements)
  6. Discusses individual student program with teachers, principals, and parents (communicating requirements)
  7. Reports testing information at meetings (communicating requirement)
  8. Observes and evaluates student performance (sight requirement)
  9. Assesses the accomplishments of students and provides progress reports (sight requirements)

Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
Master’s in special education or related field and certification in one or more areas of special education.  Three to five years teaching experience in special education.
