Job Description:
The Orchard Farm School District is seeking to fill the Director of Communications position for the 2019-20 school year. 
The Director of Communications facilitates an open exchange of information between the school district and all stakeholders. He or she directs a purposeful effort to share district successes that is important for maintaining a quality education program. The Director of Communications, guided by district policy and the Superintendent of Schools, coordinates district efforts to maintain contact with the various media and the public at large. The focus of the Director of Communications is to maintain a positive perception of district accomplishments by the public. The Director of Communications must have a repertoire of administrative, creative and interpersonal skills which work to keep the district, district staff and students informed and aware.
An individual who holds this position must:
  • Manage and organize the communication efforts of the District by coordinating the internal, parent and community communications of the District and Board;
  • Maintain effective communication related to the Strategic Plan;
  • Serve as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Officer for the District;
  • Serve as liaison between the District and the news media to promote the District and its programs and services, clarify issues and provide story ideas;
  • Work with local Chambers of Commerce and municipalities to enhance the partnership at events.
  • Serve as the District spokesperson or prepare the appropriate staff member(s) to serve that function;
  • Coordinate crisis management communication;
  • Coordinate the preparation and dissemination of the District’s publications;
  • Serve as writer and editor for District’s web site and oversee content and layout of the school websites and post necessary information in coordination with the District webmaster;
  • Produce and review presentations, newsletters, publications, and brochures;
  • Review, as needed, publications and communications sent to parents and the external community from the District;
  • Implement and revise a comprehensive communication plan with progressive and consistent activities that address community relations and raise public awareness;
  • Provide professional public relations support to the Superintendent, administration, Board and parent groups;
  • Conduct training/workshops on communication strategies;
  • Manage, coordinate and either lead or support public engagement efforts;
  • Provide information and support for public events such as community forums and District ceremonies;
  • Coordinate photography for district programs and events;
  • Coordinate surveys of internal and external publics, collect local responses to issues/trends in education;
  • Develop and maintain the communications budget;
  • Assess the effectiveness and efficiency of communication efforts and make recommendations for improvements;
  • Coordinate informational campaigns for District elections;
  • Participate and be an active member of the Administrative Council and Cabinet;
  • Lead committees and task forces as assigned by the Superintendent;
  • Attend all Board of Education meetings, make presentations as assigned and provide a recap to the staff;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Mass Communication or related field.
  • Professional experience in a full-time public relations position.
  • Accreditation by the National School Public Relations Association or Public Relations Society of America preferred, but not required.
