Job Description:
The St. Joseph, MO School District is currently accepting applications for Parent Educators-Part Time to start in July.  This position does require 1 week of training (40 hours).  Dates to be determined.

Qualifications:
 
Required: A minimum of 2 years experience in a program serving families and their young children, with 60 college credit hours.
Preferred: College degree in early childhood development, family studies, social work or a related field. 

Terms of Employment:  Specific work hours are established by home visit appointments set by parent educators and mass screening dates for the community of St. Joseph.  Families are expected to receive visits during a 12-month period.
 
Essential Job Functions:
  • Attend work in a regular, reliable and punctual manner.
  • Partner with families to find and verbalize their strengths as parents and their resilience as a family system.
  • Facilitate conversations regarding child development and family well-being.
  • Reflect with parents on their own parenting practices, helping them identify their goals as parents.
  • Highlight a family’s protective factors to increase their resilience.
  • Connect families with resources depending on their individual needs.
  • Implement the approved PAT Curriculum.
  • Screen children between 3 months and 3 years of age during the personal visit using a developmental screening as well as a health, hearing and vision screening.
  • Provide written and verbal summaries of screening results to parents.
Screening:
  1. Assist in mass screenings by implementing the approved screening tool for 3, 4 or 5-year olds.
 
Organization and Management:
  1. Prepare and distribute materials on child development/parenting to PAT families
  2. Maintain files to include records of all screenings and the required documents by DESE
  3. Enter family contacts and screening information into PAT database
  4. Write comprehensive reports from each family visit
 
Interpersonal Relationships:
  1. Establishes good rapport and maintains an on-going positive relationship with each family in the program through active listening, encouragement, affirmation, guidance and reflection.
  2. Demonstrate positive interpersonal relations with district personnel
  3. Demonstrate positive interpersonal relations with outside agencies
 
Professional Responsibilities:
  1. Complete the required professional development for annual recertification with Parents as Teachers National Center
  2. Follow the policies and procedures of the school district
  3. Demonstrate a sense of professional responsibility, and exercise thoughtful independent judgment and discretion
  4. Participate in the planning and presentation of group connections
  5. Other duties as assigned.
