POSITION SUMMARY: Assists the bus driver in maintaining appropriate student behavior and provides assistance to students in boarding, riding, and departing buses. Provides physical and behavioral care of special education students during transport to and from school. This individual attention is precipitated by specific needs that cannot be managed from the driver's seat. Performance activities involved in the safe boarding, riding, and exiting of passengers.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
  1. Assists the driver when requested or required.
  2. Assists students requiring help to load or unload the bus.
  3. Constantly monitors students' well-being and behavior during the route.
  4. Assists the bus driver in maintaining appropriate student behavior on the bus, assuring that the bus driver is not distracted from the safe operation of the vehicle.
  5. Coordinates with the bus driver to provide written documentation of inappropriate student behavior to the Transportation Department Office.
  6. Observes students while entering, leaving, and riding on the bus for behavior management and safety.
  7. Responds appropriately to students' needs during the route and notify the driver if an emergency exists.
  8. Assists the driver in keeping the bus clean.
  9. Actively assists the driver when backing the bus if necessary.
  10. Stores and secures all student equipment that is to be transported.
  11. Ensures the safety and well-being of students; assists students in evacuation procedures during emergencies and evacuation drills.
  12. Provides First Aid only as trained and required by the situation.
  13. Sits where needed on the bus but not behind the driver unless the bus is empty.
  14. Prepares and maintains written reports (i.e. incident reports, student count, passenger misconduct, etc.).
  15. Maintains close communication with the bus driver and special education teachers.
  16. Understands and carries out written directions; maintains a self-management system including schedules and daily logs.
  17. Conducts trip inspections after each run to check for sleeping children, lost articles, vandalism and vehicle cleanliness; assures that no child is ever left unsupervised on a bus.
  18. Collects and turns in those personal items left on the bus by students to building administrative office.
  19. Verbally instructs students on boarding, exiting and behavior management.
  20. Participates in all required Bus Aide training and professional development.
  21. Maintains appropriate confidentiality.
  22. Follows all district policies and procedures.
  23. Performs other duties as assigned.

  5. Ability to read, learn, and respond to a variety of job related subjects.
  6. Ability to address the needs of students with various handicapping conditions.
  7. Ability to operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement locks.
  8. Ability to report to work consistently and promptly as scheduled.
 
BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Previous experience working with or supervising children preferred.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT: 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, speak clearly, hear, and utilize manual dexterity.  This position requires the physical dexterity, coordination, mobility, visual acuity and emotional health to repetitively perform the essential functions of the position including the ability to lift and restrain students of varying age levels and sizes.  Moderate lifting and/or carrying up to 50 pounds or more, exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and exert 10-20 pounds of force often.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus during the hours of daylight and darkness.  Must be able to enter and exit a school bus and to simultaneously assist physically disabled students with the same.  The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions; moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
