Job Description:
Summary:  Provides interpreting/transliterating for students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing, thereby equalizing educational access to communication by meeting the cultural and linguistic needs of the setting.
Job Responsibilities (Examples of Work Performed):
  1. Provides visual communication access:
    1. Prepares for assignments by reviewing notes and syllabi, previewing films, videos or texts, and meeting with presenters, faculty, tutors or students.
    2. Provides culture-specific information and adapts interpretations/transliteration to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf cultures.
  2. Communicates with educational team in support of team goals and the provision of services:
    1. Demonstrates effective professional relationships with students, teachers, parents, and peers and facilitates resolution of support service concerns as a multidisciplinary education team.
    2. Provides information through a staffing to faculty, staff and students regarding (1) interpretation, (2) communication between deaf and hearing people, and (3) deafness.
    3. Represents daily the mission of Special School District.
    4. Attends staff meeting and networks with other staff members to maintain the flow of information critical to quality service. (This includes checking voice mail daily.)
    5. Provides clarification of the interpreter’s role to all students, staff, and parents.
    6. Participates in IEPs as appropriate.
    7. Maintains ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
    8. Follows supervisory chain of command as applicable to the situation.
  3. Demonstrates professional development:
    1. Maintains interpreting skills as outlined in Missouri Interpreter Certification System (MICS).
    2. Develops specialized content expertise appropriate for current assignment.
    3. Enhances interpersonal communication skills.
    4. Participates in preschool workshops, in-service training and parent conferences when appropriate.
    5. Renews license on an annual basis.
    6. Performs other duties within the guidelines of ethical conduct as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
Two years of college; demonstration of interpreting and transliterating skills (sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign) and proficiency in using the English language; knowledge of the role of an educational interpreter within the educational team; awareness of deaf culture, sign language systems and American Sign Language.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid or current State of Missouri certification and licensure.

*Must obtain State of Missouri Interpreter Certification at a minimum competency of Level 3 or RCED general and maintain State of Missouri licensure and abide by The Interpreter Code of  Conduct/Ethical Rules as promulgated by the State of Missouri (Title 4—Department of Economic Development, Division 232—Missouri State Committee of Interpreters, Chapter 3—Ethical Rules of Conduct).
