STATUS:                          175 Days, 6.5 hours per day
FLSA STATUS:              Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO:               Building Principal / Directors of Special Education
 
POSITION SUMMARY: Assist teachers in special education classroom with various non-professional tasks and assists with other activities that are primarily non-instruction, including arrival and departure of students, physical care, and recess and lunch periods.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs supportive instructional tasks and tutorial tasks under the direction of the assigned certified staff member.
  2. Monitors students during independent work activities and provides assistance, as needed.
  3. Provides tutorial assistance to students in one-to-one or small group arrangements.
  4. Provides practice and reinforcement activities for students as follow-up to direct instruction provided by the special education teacher.
  5. Provides direct instructional activities, planned by the special education teacher, as follow-up to initial instruction.
  6. Reads tests to and records responses from students needing this service as specified on the I.E.P.
  7. Performs supportive behavior management tasks under the direction of the assigned special education teacher.
  8. Assists in implementing the classroom behavior management system as designed by the special education teacher.
  9. Informs teacher of behavior and interpersonal concerns among students.
  10. Provides emotional support and encouragement to students.
  11. Assists in the supervision of special education students throughout the school day (e.g., provide support services within regular classroom, loading/unloading of buses, lunch, recess, washroom, assemblies, and movement throughout the school building, off-campus job training sites).
  12. Monitors the classroom when an emergency or other responsibility (i.e. evaluation, staffing, IEP, observation) requires the teacher to be out of the classroom.
  13. Participates in individual student IEPs as needed.
  14. Assists special education teacher in evaluation activities and special education records management.
  15. Assists in provision of physical care of students as needed.
  16. Participates in current certification in Child/Adult CPR and training in emergency first aid provided by the district, if required by position.
  17. Assures the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures and maintain the learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner.
  18. Assists students with clothing, wash-up and toilet routines, including diapering if necessary, as well as any other physical needs.
  19. Assists special education teacher with clerical duties related to the special education program (e.g., inventory of materials).
  20. Rides the bus before/after school, or otherwise, as needed, both to supervise and to assist with students’ physical needs.
  21. Follows all district policies and procedures.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.

 BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Knowledge of standard office equipment.
  3. Knowledge of basic record-keeping techniques.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT: 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, and utilize manual dexterity.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally may be required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception.  Ability to board and exit a school bus, and to assist with the physical needs of students as needed.
