Job Description:
The job of Director - Special Services directs special education programs and services; provides information and serves as a resource to others; achieves defined objectives by planning, evaluating, developing, implementing and maintaining services in compliance with established guidelines; and serves as a member of the leadership team.

Essential Functions
  • Collaborates with internal and external personnel (e.g. other administrators, Operations, Alternative Programs, public agencies, community members, etc.) to implement and/or maintain services and programs.
  • Compiles data from a wide variety of sources (e.g. finances, DESE, student outcomes, etc.) to analyze issues, ensuring compliance with organization policies and procedures, and/or monitoring program components.
  • Coordinates program components, staff meetings, professional development activities, support needs and materials to deliver services which conform to established guidelines.
  • Directs department operations, the maintenance of services and the implementation of new programs and/or processes in order to provide services within established timeframes and in compliance with related requirements.
  • Facilitates meetings, workshops, seminars, etc. (e.g. due process hearings, district liaison, special education parent groups, etc.) to identify issues, develop recommendations, support other staff and serve as a District representative.
  • Implements assigned programs, policies, and/or projects to conform to district and state curriculum and/or instructional objectives.
  • Leads and manages the special education department and its programs to ensure effective delivery of services which conform to established guidelines.
  • Responsible for budget allocations, staff allocations, expenditures, fund balances and related financial activities to ensure that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
  • Participates in a wide variety of meetings (e.g. presentations, Board meetings, training, hearings, IEPs, professional development, etc.) in order to convey and/or gather information required to perform functions.
  • Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc.) to maintain adequate staffing, enhance productivity of personnel and achieve objectives within budget.
  • Prepares a wide variety of often complex materials (e.g. annual compliance plans, budgets, funding requests, reports, analyses, recommendations, procedures, practices, etc.) to document activities and issues, meet compliance requirements, provide audit references, make presentations, and/or provide supporting materials for requested actions.
  • Researches a variety of topics required to manage assignments (e.g. relevant policies, new federal and state statutes, staffing requirements, financial resources, etc.) to develop new programs/services, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, securing general information and/or responding to requests.
  • Responds to issues involving staff, conflicts in policies and regulations, community concerns, parental requests that may result in some negative impact and/or liability if not appropriately addressed in order to identify the relevant issues and recommend or implement a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. workshops, inter and intra district committees, community and public agencies, seminars, conferences, etc.) in order to convey and gather information regarding a wide variety of subjects required to carry out administrative responsibilities.
Experience
Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
 
Education
Master’s degree in job-related area is required.
