  Qualifications:
  1.   Certificate in cross-categorical in SPED or in the individual area of vacancy
  2.  Degree in special education (B.S. minimum) 
 Summary:
 
Successful Special Education Teacher Candidates must be able to demonstrate strong abilities in the development and implementation of strategies to meet the needs of students with a variety of diverse needs.  Candidates will work closely with students with diverse learning needs, creating individualized plans, and providing tailored instruction to help each child achieve their potential.  Special education teachers must have the skills necessary to communicate and collaborate with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic needs.
 
 The successful candidate will:
 
  • demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements
  • administers, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g. tube feedings, toileting, diapering, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for children as assigned
  • proactively plan for instruction for those with major academic delays
  • have knowledge of key aspects of Math and ELA curriculum, including DLM Essential Elements.
  • administers developmental testing programs, state testing for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual education plans.
  • actively utilize differentiated instruction
  • be able to effectively collect data on a regular basis
  • use data to plan and drive instruction
  • be willing to work with students individually or in small group
  • collaborates with professional learning community resources (e.g. OT, PT, SLP, etc.) for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan
  • be able to implement behavioral management techniques with students
  • be familiar with implementing behavior plans
  • be familiar and able to work with students with diverse handicapping conditions
  • be able to work with and coordinate services for students with paraprofessionals, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech / language therapists
  • communicate effectively and proactively with parents
  • maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic files and records (e.g. IEPs, etc) for the purpose of providing up-to-date information and/or historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements
  • familiar with implementing functional and life skills curriculum, utilizing visual supports/schedules, collaborating to implement augmentative communication systems
  • prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. IEPs, grades, testing schedules, lesson plans, attendance, appropriate behavior plans, daily behavior charts, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • attend/facilitate IEP meetings
