Job Description: Director of Special Education
Reports to: Head of Student Support Services
 
Overview:
Atlas Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and experienced Director of Special Education to lead the development and implementation of high-quality special education programs that support student success. This individual will ensure compliance with all legal requirements, foster collaboration among educators, and work closely with families to provide equitable opportunities for all students. The Director of Special Education will play a critical role in shaping inclusive practices, advancing student learning, and ensuring that every child thrives.
 
Key Responsibilities:
Program Development and Oversight
  • Design and implement special education programs and services aligned with the school's mission and state/federal requirements.
  • Collaborate with school leadership to integrate special education within the broader curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Collaborate with general education staff to promote inclusive practices and co-teaching strategies.
  • Help foster innovative approaches to special education.
  • Advocate for the needs of special education students to ensure equitable access to school resources and opportunities.
Compliance and Documentation
  • Ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Oversee special education audits and reporting to meet local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Coordinate and lead the IEP process, ensuring documentation is accurate and current, and that all stakeholders are involved in developing and updating plans.
Team Leadership and Staff Development
  • Train, coach, and evaluate special education staff, including teachers, aides, and paraprofessionals, on best practices, curriculum, and compliance.
  • Provide professional development for general education teachers to enhance inclusive practices and support diverse learners.
  • Serve as a resource for staff on differentiation, behavior support, and modifications to meet diverse student needs.
  • Support teachers in writing data-driven, compliant IEPs and 504 plans, ensuring effective implementation and monitoring.
  • Foster a collaborative team culture to enhance morale and retention among the special education staff.
Data-Driven Decision Making
  • Oversee the student intervention and referral process, analyzing benchmark and progress monitoring data to inform decisions.
  • Manage and coordinate the evaluation process (RED), ensuring state and federal requirements and timelines are met.
  • Use data to evaluate program effectiveness, track student progress, and make adjustments to improve outcomes.
Family and Community Engagement
  • Build strong relationships with families to ensure open communication about students' progress, challenges, and support plans.
  • Partner with families to keep them informed and actively involved in their child’s education.
  • Collaborate with community organizations to provide additional resources and support for students and families.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Valid state certification in Special Education or Special Education Administration.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in special education, including teaching and leadership roles.
  • Deep knowledge of IDEA, IEPs, 504 plans, and state/federal compliance requirements.
  • Experience with data analysis, data analysis tools and using data to drive program improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
