Title: Guidance Counselor – Middle School
Reports to: Middle School Building Principal
Classification: Certified
FLSA Status: Exempt
Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy
  on Evaluation of Certified Staff.
Terms of Employment and compensation: Contract length will be determined by the Lexington R-V Board of Education.  Salary will be determined in accordance with the current extra duty and/or teacher salary schedule adopted by the Board for the school year.  Benefits will be determined by the Board.
JOB SUMMARY:  To provide a comprehensive guidance program for students in grades 5-8.  The counselor provides activities to meet the needs of their assigned case-load, consults with teachers, staff, and parents/guardians to enhance their effectiveness in helping students and provides support to other middle school educational programs.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Additional duties may be assigned.
  • Implement the middle school guidance curriculum.
  • Guide and counsel groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans.
  • Counsel small groups and individual students with concerns.
  • Consult with teachers, staff, and parents/guardians regarding meeting the developmental needs of students.
  • Refer students with severe problems to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents/guardians.
  • Participate in, coordinate, or conduct activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school.
  • Evaluate and revise the building guidance program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building administrator.


TIME DISTRIBUTION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELOR:  In order to carry out a comprehensive developmental guidance program in the middle school, the following allocations of time are expected:
Guidance Curriculum 25%-30%
Individual Planning 15%-25%
Responsive Services 30%-40%
System Support 10%-15%

QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • The Guidance Counselor shall have completed a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • The guidance Counselor shall have at least two years of teaching experience.
  • The Guidance Counselor shall meet state certification requirements as a counselor for elementary education, and meet any other requirements as may be deemed necessary for the position by state requirements and/or the Lexington R-V Board of Education.
  • The employee will complete a satisfactory criminal/abuse and neglect background check in accordance with state law and Board policy
