Job Description:
Literacy Coach


St. Louis Public Schools is seeking Literacy Coaches to serve under the supervision of the Principal and the Instructional Supervisor. Literacy Coach will be instrumental in assisting teachers in improving classroom communication arts instruction, to ensure that a significant increase in student literacy will occur as defined by student performance on a variety of assessments.

Essential Functions:
- Deliver professional development to teachers using methods proven effective through research and practice
- Provide teachers with specific instructional strategies for student intervention or enrichment of student's skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, high order thinking skills (critical thinking), expository, narrative and persuasive writing
- Oversee implementation of the Comprehensive Literacy Plan
- Assist in identifying and implementing methods for assessing student progress in literacy development
- Identify and assist teachers in implementing methods for motivating students to engage in effort-based work that increases achievement in reading, thinking and writing

Experience:
- A minimum of five years of related teaching; more is desirable
- Experience working in a position as a trainer, curriculum coach or other position that formalized support and training of teachers in order to improve their teaching skills in reading, writing, spelling and language

Education:
- Masters Degree
- State Certification as a Elementary/Middle Teacher or Secondary Teacher (English)
- Special Reading Certification, Masters Degree in Reading or National Board Reading Certificate + appropriate Coaches Training OR
- Appropriate Grade Level Certification + Content Area + Training & Successful Experience in Teaching DESE Approved Research Based Reading + Appropriate Coaches Training
